Senior Electronics Design Engineer – S[&]T – Delft

Jobid=631821593477775875 (0.0272)

We are currently looking for a Senior Electronics Design Engineer to join our team in Delft!

As Earth observation missions continue to demand higher-resolution sensors and increasingly intelligent payloads, the need for a new generation of onboard processing capabilities is growing rapidly. Processing data directly in space enables faster decision-making, reduces bandwidth requirements, and unlocks entirely new mission concepts. At S&T, we are developing the next generation of onboard processing platforms that combine high-performance electronics, advanced software, and AI to bring these enhanced capabilities into orbit as quickly as possible.

As a Senior Electronics Design Engineer, you will play a key role in the development of our first-generation onboard computing platform. You will be responsible for the complete hardware development lifecycle, from concept through production. Your responsibilities include schematic capture, PCB layout, manufacturing support, testing, debugging, validation, and commissioning of electronic assemblies.

You will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, including System Architects, FPGA Engineers, Embedded Systems Engineers, Space Systems Engineers, and Mechanical Engineers, to develop high-performance, reliable products for demanding environments.

This role offers the opportunity to work across multiple engineering disciplines, combine technologies into innovative solutions, and make a direct impact on the development of advanced products within a dynamic, high-tech organization.

Main responsibilities:

  • Lead the PCB design team by establishing efficient engineering processes and ways of working. Mentor and support junior and medior Electronics Design Engineers in their day-to-day activities, and perform design reviews to ensure technical quality and compliance.
  • Translate system-level requirements into robust hardware designs, ensuring that all high-level functional, performance, and reliability requirements are fully implemented.
  • Perform board-level Signal Integrity (SI) analysis, simulation, and validation to optimize high-speed interfaces and mitigate crosstalk, impedance mismatches, and electromagnetic interference.
  • Conduct Power Integrity (PI) analysis, simulation, and measurements to ensure stable power distribution and reliable system performance under dynamic operating conditions.
  • Perform thermal analysis, simulation, and validation of electronic assemblies to ensure reliable operation under all operating and environmental conditions. Collaborate with Mechanical Engineers to optimize thermal management through PCB stack-up, component placement, heat spreading, and heatsink design.
  • Support environmental qualification and acceptance testing of electronic hardware, including vibration, thermal cycling, thermal vacuum (TVAC), radiation, EMC/EMI, and functional testing. Work closely with Space Systems and Mechanical Engineers to prepare test campaigns, analyse test results, investigate anomalies, and implement design improvements to ensure compliance with mission and customer requirements.
  • Work closely with procurement and supply chain partners to select components with long-term availability and secure sourcing strategies, minimizing supply chain risks.
  • Collaborate with external PCB manufacturers and assembly partners to ensure Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) compliance, supporting a smooth transition from prototype to production.
  • Define component selection strategies, considering radiation tolerance, reliability, obsolescence, manufacturability, and long-term availability, particularly for space and defence applications.

Requirements:

  • Education: A BSc or MSc degree in Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline, or an equivalent level of knowledge demonstrated through relevant professional experience in electronics hardware design and development.
  • Experience: Minimum 10 years of dedicated electronics design experience, with relevant experience in high-speed digital design.
  • EDA Tools: Expert proficiency in industry-standard CAD suites (e.g., Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, or Siemens Xpedition).
  • Experience with high-speed interfaces such as DDR memory, PCIe, Ethernet, SpaceFibre or similar communication protocols.
  • Familiarity with FPGA-based hardware architectures, high-speed processors, memory interfaces, and embedded computing platforms.
  • Ability to analyze and debug high-speed hardware issues using laboratory measurement equipment and systematic troubleshooting techniques.
  • Affinity with the Defence sector and the ability to obtain Dutch, NATO, or EU security clearances (required).
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken); Dutch is an advantage.
