PhD Position Network Data Science for Telecom & Urban Infrastructure Optimization – Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) – Delft

Jobid=8cde0864a5c9 (0.0156)

Job description

Challenge: Uncovering the interdependency between telecommunications networks and urban infrastructures.

Change: Developing data analysis and modelling methods to understand the interdependency.

Impact: Better design to enhance telecom and urban performance.

The functioning of cities increasingly relies on urban infrastructures such as transportation networks, power grids, water networks, Internet of Things sensors, and analytics platforms that gather data from those infrastructures, as well as telecommunications networks. To fully support the operation of cities, telecommunications networks also need to evolve, offering ubiquitous connectivity and decentralised data‑center capabilities to optimise urban performance. This PhD project aims to explore how telecommunications networks and urban infrastructures interdepend and co‑evolve, and to identify network designs that can further enhance global telecommunications and urban performance.

You will be part of a leading team in network data science within the Multimedia Computing Group (MMC) in Computer Science. The supervision team consists of Dr. Huijuan Wang from MMC and Dr. Eric Smeitink from KPN and the Network Architectures and Services Group. You will collaborate with partners and external collaborators from NExTWORKx and other projects on critical infrastructures, working in an international and inter‑disciplinary research group.

Job requirements

  • MSC in Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, Mathematics or related disciplines with a strong background in data analysis, mathematical modelling and algorithms.
  • Good programming skills in Python, C or C++.
  • Good oral and written skills in English.
  • Enjoys working in an international and inter‑disciplinary research group.
  • Strong research mindset driven by curiosity and passion for the topic; dedication, adaptability, analytical skills, time‑management, innovation, and resilience.

Conditions of employment

Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4‑year period of employment, consisting of two contracts: an initial 1.5‑year contract with a go/no‑go assessment within 15 months, followed by a contract for the remaining 2.5 years assuming performance requirements are met.

Salary and benefits

Salary is in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, ranging from €3,059 to €3,881 gross per month from the first to the fourth year, based on a full‑time contract (38 h). Additional benefits include 8 % holiday allowance, an end‑of‑year bonus of 8.3 %, discounts on health insurance, a monthly work‑costs contribution, and flexible work schedules.

As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School, which offers a comprehensive programme to develop transferable, discipline‑related and research skills.
