Job description
Join our pioneering PhD project on Digital Product Passports and compliance monitoring for the Green steel transition and be part of the innovative inter-disciplinary program Growing with Green Steel.
The ICT group at the Department of Engineering Systems and Services (ESS) at Delft University of Technology is part of the National Growth Fund program Growing with Green Steel (GGS), which aims at making the Dutch steel sector circular, CO₂-neutral, and high-tech by 2050. As part of GGS, Dutch universities, research institutes and industrial partners will develop new technologies for an accelerated transition towards green steel.
We are looking for a PhD candidate to research the utilization of Digital Product Passports (DPP) for compliance monitoring of steel circularity and the green steel transition. The focus will be on business‑government partnerships and how authorities can build upon embedded control systems used by businesses to perform compliance monitoring.
Position Overview
The candidate should hold a Master’s degree in business, public administration, information systems, data science, computer science, or related fields with a strong interest in circularity and compliance monitoring. The PhD project will involve close collaboration with GGS partners and interdisciplinary teams across the Themes Recovery, Production, Processing, Use and System Change.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop design principles for the use of Digital Product Passports for compliance monitoring and business‑government collaboration in the green steel transition.
- Collaborate with experts from the GGS consortium to develop, test and refine the design principles and guidelines.
- Work independently and contribute collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
Project Impact
The GGS program aims at making the Dutch steel sector circular, CO₂-neutral, and high-tech by 2050. This research will contribute to cutting‑edge knowledge on digital platforms, infrastructures, and product passports to support the green and digital transition.
Job requirements
- MSc in business, information systems, data science, computer science, or related fields.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Strong interest in interdisciplinary research, circularity, compliance monitoring and the use of ICT in inter‑organizational networks.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment.
- Excellent command of English.
Conditions of employment
Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4‑year period of employment in principle, consisting of an initial 1.5‑year contract with a progress assessment after 15 months, followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2.5 years, contingent on satisfactory performance.
Salary and benefits
Salary is in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, ranging from €3 059 to €3 881 gross per month, increasing over the four years. The package also includes 8 % holiday allowance, an end‑of‑year bonus of 8.3 %, health insurance discounts, monthly work‑costs contribution, and flexible working arrangements.
