PhD Position Battery Energy Storage for Multi-functional Traction Grids – TU Delft – Delft

Jobid=621097789591721141 (0.0279)

Job description

Integrating batteries into traction grids is finding new applications with the integration of renewable energy sources (RES) and third‑party users. Energy storage will be applied for voltage control and peak shaving, buffering renewable generation and electric‑vehicle charger loads, and supporting robust state estimation and full‑spectrum converter design within a DC grid.

Research tasks include:

  • Proper sizing of RES systems on the DC side under generational mismatch.
  • Design of buffer strategies for EV chargers to maximise consumption of excess RES and braking energy.
  • Development of state estimators based on limited measurements to enable accurate dispatch.
  • Design of wide‑input, wide‑output, multi‑port DC–DC converters connecting batteries, EV chargers, RES, and the traction grid.

Job requirements

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Experience modelling batteries, solar PV systems, DC grid power flows, or EV charging demand.
  • Solid background in power electronics and experimental setup development.
  • Excellent English and programming skills required; Dutch knowledge an advantage.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.

Conditions of employment

Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4‑year period of employment in principle, structured as two contracts: an initial 1.5‑year contract with a progress assessment after 15 months, followed by a 2.5‑year contract contingent on satisfactory performance.

Salary and benefits

Salary is €2 901–€3 707 gross per month, increasing from the first to the fourth year, based on a full‑time contract (38 hours). Additional benefits include 8 % holiday allowance and an end‑of‑year bonus of 8.3 %.
