Internship | Sun-driven sustainable chemical processes – TNO – Delft

  • Delft

TNO

About this position

Driven by the global aspiration to achieve a CO2-neutral society, the conversion of CO2 to higher energy carriers has recently grown into a significant research field. To achieve a sustainable process, the sunlight driven nanoparticle enabled photocatalysis reaction has shown promising results. Nanoparticle (NP) catalyst is an important ingredient: it is an efficient light absorber and varying its size and load directly affects the chemical reaction rate.

What will be your role?

The aim is to study the photothermal effect of nanoparticle catalyst and quantify various contributing factors. Various light sources including LEDs and laser will be studied as the light source for the light driven chemical process. The induced photothermal effect in the nanoparticle catalyst bed will be characterized using fiber optic sensor arrays. You will learn to use those optical devices for systematic measurement and testing. Data processing is necessary to convert optical measurement to physical parameters. The photothermal conversion efficiency of lighting sources will be compared.
You will be part of a diverse team consisting of engineers and scientists helping to create impactful innovations.

What we expect from you

  • Master student in physics or relevant field of engineering;
  • Hands-on mentality;
  • You have affinity with hardware and would like to (learn) build setups, and perform data acquisition and processing;
  • Critical towards data and result;
  • Team player in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • What you’ll get in return

    You want an internship opportunity on the precursor of your career; an internship gives you an opportunity to take a good look at your prospective future employer. TNO goes a step further. It’s not just looking that interests us; you and your knowledge are essential to our innovation. That’s why we attach a great deal of value to your personal and professional development. You will, of course, be properly supervised during your work placement and be given the scope for you to get the best out of yourself. Furthermore, we provide:

  • A highly professional, innovative internship environment, within a team of top experts.
  • A suitable internship allowance ( euro for wo-, hbo-students and mbo-students, for a full-time internship).
  • Possibility of eight hours of free leave per internship month (for a full-time internship).
  • A free membership of , where you can meet other TNO professionals and join , such as sports activities, (work-related) courses or the yearly ski-trip.
  • Use of a laptop.
  • An allowance for travel expenses in case you don’t receive an OV-card.
